AIS EDUCATION PRIMARY A-LEVELS SECONDARY

education1 EN OUR EDUCATION At AIS International School, we believe that by educating using Waldorf-inspired inspired methods and mindfulness integrated with the British National Curriculum and standards, equal emphasis is placed on a solid academic foundation, artistic expression, and social and emotional development. AIS EDUCATIONAL APPROACH Our personalised approach to the education of each child permeates through all stages of their learning; and our dedicated and engaged teaching team, nurture and inspire creativity, critical and independent thinking, as well as motivated learning at each stage: Read More The school day An important aspect of our educational system is the Main Lesson. One subject is studied in depth for three weeks at the beginning of every school day. A wide range of subjects is studied over the school year within the framework of a clearly defined curriculum. The precise content and arrangement of the Main Lesson will depend on the class teachers’ artistic presentation, but will include a range of proactive activities together with the main theme. Read More Assessment AIS is authorised by the British Council through NABSS (The National Association of British Schools in Spain) and the Department of Education of the Generalitat Valenciana. The two main assessment stages are IGCSES and A-levels.

The British National Curriculum is set out as follows:

education2 EN Curriculum ______________ The principle running throughout the curriculum is that learning should take place as experientially as possible, so that there is a deep understanding and appreciation of the material covered.

Creativity is nurtured through an approach that focuses on integration of artistic activity with academic instruction. Our offer at AIS is a rich balance of academics, art, music, drama, handwork and movement, - a holistic curriculum that helps to build individual abilities and self-confidence.

“After all, the function of education is to turn out an integrated individual who is capable of dealing with life.”

education3 EN THE MAIN LESSON ______________ The students create their own Main Lesson book for each subject based on the material presented by the class teacher. These books are carefully crafted and illustrated and are a record of the student’s progress over the year. The Main Lesson blocks are taught by teachers with specialized knowledge in that particular area. The Main Lesson subjects include: Maths, English/Drama, History, Geography and Science.

During the rest of the school day, the students follow a timetable of lessons in other subjects which are taught by specialist teachers.

These lessons are on a fixed timetable throughout the year and include: Maths, English, Science, Spanish, Valenciano, German, Music, Art, Crafts, ICT, Gardening and PSHE (Personal and Social Health Education).

At AIS, all classes from Class 6 (Year 7) through to Class 10 (Year 11) also have the opportunity to go on residential trips at the end of the school year.

Sixth form: Key stage 5: school years 12 and 13

Information on British and Spanish school years
LINK Students will take the British GCSEs at 16, equivalent to the Spanish ‘graduado escolar’ allowing access to post-16 study programmes, both Spanish and international.

Altea International School follows the National Curriculum of England and Wales, is authorised by the British Council and certified as a British school by NABSS (The National Association of British Schools in Spain). AIS complies with the requirements set by the British Council for British schools in Spain.

AIS is also authorised by the Ministry of Education of the ‘Generalitat Valenciana’ through the ‘Dirección General de Centros y Personal Docentes’.

The curriculum works towards IGCSEs (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) at Key Stage 4. At Key Stage 4, the timetable differs according to the student’s individual option choices. For students studying for the official iGCSE exams, AIS is currently offering the following subjects:
  • English language and 2nd language
  • Spanish
  • German
  • Science: Biology, Chemistry, Physics
  • Maths
  • P.E.
  • Computer Science
  • History
  • Geography
AIS assessment policy serves two essential purposes: to support learning and to establish standards.
The former identifies areas that need to be focused on, sets appropriate tasks and characterises the student’s approach, attitude and ability within the context of their development.

The second form of assessment provides data that can be quantified, relates to specific attainments and states what a student can or cannot do according to an objectively set standard. This is the form used by external exam moderation boards for GCSE and A-levels exams.

We believe that both forms of assessment have their place, but if applied inappropriately either of them can stifle development.

At Key Stages 4 and 5, although these students are following a more rigorous academic curriculum, we do not lose sight of our school ethos, which is to prepare rounded balanced young people, ready for the challenges of adult life.

Primary Education We aim to provide an education that supports the child’s healthy development; an education that is based on an understanding of the stages of a child’s physical, emotional and intellectual development and meets all aspects of these needs. We see the curriculum as a meaningful whole as opposed to a collection of fragmented subjects.

Our offer at AIS is a rich balance of academics, art, music, drama, handwork and movement – a curriculum that is lively and current, designed to help form an understanding of the world and our relation to it.

Dedicated and engaged teachers with specialist knowledge teach a variety of advanced A-Level subjects Connectedness More Info A-LEVELS

A-level Info EN A-Levels A rigorous and competent preparation for A levels (Bachillerato equivalent) with validation for university entry and higher education in Spain and other international education systems. SIXTH FORM/KEY STAGE 5 Sixth form is the two years of academic study for children aged 16-18 in preparation for admission to university. Several subjects are studied in depth and students can make their preferred choices from a range of subjects. The assessment is through A-levels which are required for university entry and are the equivalent of the Spanish Bachillerato. The sixth form students undertake “in school placements” where they are allocated specific times during the week in which they support a designated class teacher or specific students. These placements have been proven in that the students learn responsibility and become aware of their own capabilities. They also learn how their presence can make a notable difference within a class or for a particular student they are supporting. Read More A-LEVEL EXAMS At the end of Year 13, at age 18, (the equivalent of the 2nd year of the Spanish Bachillerato) the students will sit A-Levels (Advanced Levels), these are the final exams of their school career. Each student’s university prospects relies on the A-level results: Here we explain how A-levels are accepted within different countries. The basic requirement for university entry with A-levels is two or more subject passes. Different universities (and countries) have different criteria. Read More
